The Coton de Tulear is the official dog breed of Madagascar. It's ancestors were brought to the port city of Tulear (now Tolaira), for which the breed is named, by French and Portuguese sailors.
For centuries, the Coton was a favored companion of the wealthy residents of Tulear, in southern Madagascar, where it continued to breed to type. Although still rare, this Bichon-type breed is becoming increasingly more popular in the United States as well.
The Coton de Tulear breed was first recognized by the FCI in 1970 and then in 1974 became officially recognized by the AKC.
Our Coton De Tulear parents and puppies have been registered with APRI.
A Coton is a very sociable dog that gets along well with children, as well as with other dogs and animals. It becomes very attached to its home and master, wanting always to be in their presence and trying its best to please.
The Coton is intelligent and makes a great watchdog. It is full of tricks and surprises to amaze its master. One of its endearing traits is the ability to jump or walk on its hind legs. The Coton is playful, teasing, and very affectionate.
Cotons thrive on their master's approval, so in training it is important to use a praise-based approach (with treats) rather then punishment.
"Coton" is the French word for cotton. Like the name suggests, the most unusual feature of the Coton de Tulear is its cotton-textured coat of hair, instead of fur, along with a long topcoat. It sheds little and is a good breed for people with allergies.
